Home / Noordwijk, the place

City & Region

Noordwijk lies on the Dutch coast, about 40 kilometres from Amsterdam. Since the 1960s it has been home to Europe’s main space technology centre.

A space town by the sea

ESTEC arrived in 1964, when the Dutch government chose Noordwijk for ESRO’s technology centre; it was inaugurated in 1968. Its test centre stands on sandy dunes along the coast. The full story is on From ESRO to ESA.

Science profile

Noordwijk’s science is concentrated at ESTEC: spacecraft engineering, environmental testing and the European cooperation that pays for both. The institutions are described on Institutes & Facilities.

On the Atlas

Noordwijk is the second stop on the Space route of the TheScience.fm Atlas, between Pasadena, where robotic missions are flown, and Bonn, where Germany’s space programme is planned.
